The Las Vegas Strip hotel that ushered in the era of megaresorts will close forever on July 17. The Mirage will reopen as the Hard Rock Las Vegas following a major refurbishment.
Why The Mirage is closing in Las Vegas
The Mirage Hotel and Casino, which opened in 1989, was a key factor in converting the Las Vegas Strip into the luxury resort destination it is today. Its success paved the door for additional legendary properties, including Excalibur, Luxor, and the MGM Grand, all of which debuted within the next four years. The property’s demise symbolizes the end of an era while simultaneously ushering in a new chapter in the growth of the Las Vegas Strip.
Hard Rock International (HRI) will be able to start building a new integrated resort with a 700-foot hotel tower styled like a guitar after the closure is completed. The project is expected to open in 2027. The iconic Las Vegas Strip will be clearly visible from the top of the new skyscraper, which is shaped like a musical instrument.

“We’d like to thank the Las Vegas community and team members for warmly welcoming Hard Rock after enjoying 34 years at The Mirage,” Human Resources International Chairman Jim Allen stated. He also expressed his gratitude to the employees for their support throughout the years.
Las Vegas Makes Way for the Future
The second significant hotel and casino closure on the Las Vegas Strip in recent months is the closure of the Mirage Hotel and Casino. The Tropicana Las Vegas is scheduled to be demolished via implosion in late 2024, following its April closure. There are rumors that the closure is to make room for a possible $1.5 billion baseball stadium agreement.
